The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay had an idea to create a Kupuna Place, an outdoor exercise circle seniors could gather for senior exercise with other seniors. Rotary shopped for available locations and equipment and met with Princeville of Hanalei Community Association (PHCA) to pitch them on the project......
PHCA agreed to incorporate Kaua‘i Kupuna Place in their master plan at Prince Albert Park, and Hanalei Rotary embarked on a journey of fundraising for an outdoor senior exercise park. Along the way, we learned that https://states.aarp.org/hawaii/ had grant money for senior projects. We submitted the grant to AARP and then a very fortuitous thing occurred.
It turned out that AARP had made a 3-year commitment in 2018 to build FitLots, a turnkey exercise system, along with 3 years of FREE certified training classes for our seniors, in all 50 states and 3 US territories to be completed by September 202 1. We won the grant for the state of Hawaii, and miraculously, in under four months, we got the grant, the permits, and the FitLot was completed in Princeville's park.
The 42' diameter exercise circle is specifically designed for the needs of seniors, and the FitLot at Kaua‘i Kupuna Place has been recently completed thanks to a generous $250,000 grant from AARP.
